Maintaining good oral hygiene is crucial to maintain good overall health. For many, the use of commercial toothpaste may not be the best option, as they can contain harmful chemicals and synthetic ingredients that can affect our overall health. For us as a family the use of anything containing dyes, fluoride, additives etc. was not an option. Using an all-natural re-mineralizing toothpaste can provide multiple benefits, including preventing tooth decay, strengthening enamel, and improving overall oral health. In today's post, we will guide you through making your own re-mineralizing toothpaste using natural, chemical-free ingredients.

Understanding Re-Mineralizing Toothpaste:

Tooth re-mineralization refers to the process of restoring lost minerals, such as calcium and phosphorous, to the tooth enamel. All-natural re-mineralizing toothpaste is a natural and effective way to support this process. Key ingredients, such as bentonite clay, baking soda, xylitol, coconut oil, salt, calcium carbonate powder, and water, work together to help naturally re-mineralize teeth. For best results, we suggest using a glass container to store your toothpaste as plastic containers can leach chemicals.

Benefits of Our Ingredients:

When it comes to creating your own all-natural re-mineralizing toothpaste, the secret lies in the powerful ingredients it contains. Let's take a closer look at four key players in this dental DIY: bentonite clay, baking soda, xylitol, and calcium carbonate powder.

Bentonite Clay: This remarkable clay boasts numerous health benefits for your teeth and gums. It has natural detoxifying properties that help draw out impurities and toxins, promoting a cleaner and healthier oral environment. Additionally, bentonite clay is known for its high mineral content, including calcium and potassium, which contribute to the remineralization of tooth enamel, strengthening your teeth in the process. You can also use Food Grade Bentonite Clay this is one we have tried before, Aztec secret bentonite clay is just our preference.

Baking soda: It's not just for baking! Baking soda is a true multitasker in oral care. Its mild abrasive properties gently remove surface stains, revealing a brighter smile. Baking soda also helps neutralize acid in the mouth, reducing the risk of tooth decay and enamel erosion. Its natural deodorizing properties also freshen your breath, leaving you feeling confident throughout the day. We love to use Bob's Red Mill Baking Soda - We also love to purchase in bulk because we use baking soda for a lot of different things!

Xylitol: This natural sweetener not only adds a touch of sweetness to your toothpaste but also provides several oral health benefits. Xylitol has been shown to inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria in the mouth, reducing the risk of cavities and gum disease. It also helps balance the pH level in your mouth, creating an environment that is less conducive to bacterial growth. With its low glycemic index, xylitol is a great alternative for those watching their sugar intake. This is the brand of xylitol that we use!

Calcium carbonate powder: As the main mineral component of teeth, calcium is essential for maintaining their strength and integrity. Calcium carbonate powder helps replenish lost minerals in tooth enamel, promoting re-mineralization and combating tooth decay. By incorporating this ingredient into your toothpaste, you are giving your teeth the essential building blocks they need to stay strong and healthy. We make our own from our farm fresh egg shells which you can find how to do HERE, but if you do not have access to farm fresh / good quality egg shells you can also use this brand of Calcium Carbonate Powder as well.

By harnessing the power of these natural ingredients – bentonite clay, baking soda, xylitol, and calcium carbonate powder – you can create a re-mineralizing toothpaste that not only cleans and freshens your mouth but also provides a host of oral health benefits. It's time to embrace the natural approach and give your smile the care it deserves!

You can add essential oils such as clove essential oil or peppermint essential oil to aid with the taste. We like to use this Strawberry flavor to make it toddler friendly! This strawberry flavor has been the only way to get our little one to use this toothpaste as well.

Gathering the Ingredients:

All the ingredients needed for making all natural re-mineralizing toothpaste are widely available at health food stores or online. We suggest using organic, high-quality ingredients to ensure that you are using the purest and most effective ingredients. We have listed our favorites as our recommendations. Be sure when mixing to use a wooden spoon NOT metal! Metal can react with the clay and change it's properties! Bentonite clay has a negative electrical charge, and when it comes into contact with metal, it can become positively charged. For storage containers we purchased this set that each came with their own bamboo spoons. That way we can have one jar in each bathroom (The do not get filled to the top), and then I used the other jars for other miscellaneous things in the kitchen.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Measure bentonite clay, baking soda, xylitol, and calcium carbonate powder in a small bowl for mixing. Each ingredient serves a specific purpose and helps in the remineralization of the tooth enamel.

  2. Add melted organic coconut oil, known for its natural antibacterial properties, to the dry mixture and mix with a wooden spoon to incorporate into the dry mixture. The goal is to achieve a smooth consistency.

  3. Gradually add water while mixing the ingredients. Add salt, if desired, for additional antibacterial benefits.

  4. Thoroughly mix and adjust consistency by adding more or less water as needed to achieve a smooth paste.

  5. Transfer to your glass storage container and use when brushing teeth daily.

Storage and Use:

Transfer the toothpaste mixture to a glass container and store it in a cool, dry place. With proper storage, the toothpaste can last up to three months but highly recommend storing for 1 month. Because we are all using it 2 times per day, ours never lasts more than a month.

To use, apply a small amount of the toothpaste to a toothbrush and brush your teeth as you would with regular toothpaste.

Making an all-natural re-mineralizing toothpaste is simple and cost-effective. With the right steps, ingredients, and storage, you can make an effective natural toothpaste. It can benefit your oral health in several ways, including preventing tooth decay, reducing gum inflammation, and improving overall oral health. Plus, it's an excellent choice for those seeking a simpler, all-natural, and self-sustaining lifestyle.
